Brain Quest Preschool Books Description
Amazon.com Review
Your 4- to 5-year-old will absolutely delight at how much she or he knows while working with the 300 questions in these Brain Quest decks for preschool children. It’s the bunny, of course, that does not live “in a river, swamp, or sea.” (That’s where the crab and alligator live!) Later, it is not long-lashed Amanda the Panda–the deck’s adorable guide figure–”who is eating with chopsticks.” (Amanda has a fork. And a light brown bear has a spoon. It’s the bunny who has the chopsticks!) Proud of their success in unraveling the answers from these cheerful illustrations, kids will gladly challenge themselves to the harder fare, like finding the rectangle in the picture, or counting the circles on the Olympic flag. Parents too will enjoy the authors’ focus on real-world scenarios and real-world questions. Woven through these happy academic fundamentals are lessons about getting dressed, colors, body parts, and many other concepts that benefit preschoolers immensely. (Ages 4 to 5) –Jean Lenihan

My 4-year old loves this!
If your child is 4, get the next level brainquest
Great for standing in line
Each page has 3 questions and fun illustrations, with the answers on the next page (also with fun illustrations). Covers a wide variety of Preschool level topics, from numbers and colors, to logic, patterns, shapes and thinking skills. A great item to have along anytime you need to "kill time" (like sitting in a restaurant or on an airplane). I highly recommend it!
My daughter is 4.5 and I thought preschool level would be just right for her, but it’s too easy – and she’s your average preschooler. Luckily I’ve got a 3 year old too, and she is enjoying these cards, so it’s not a total waste of money. I recommend those for kids under 4-5.
I purchased this item to expand my 3 and 4 year olds’ minds. Well, they both loved this game. And the best thing I ever did was take it to Disney World with us and played it with the kids while we were standing in lines for the rides. It made the time go so fast, the kids were learning and even the other children standing in line were interested. This year we are going back to Disney and I just purchased the Pre-school and the Kindergarten ones. I am planning on more success standing in long lines with small children. I highly recommend this product!

Math Made Easy!
~The Rebecca Review
I recently purchased this workbook and was generally pleased –until my third grader began to practice her multiplication tables. We were both very disappointed to learn there were no worksheets for times tables for the 6′s, 7′s, 8′s and 9′s. I couldn’t figure out why they would be omitted. There were worksheets for the 2′s, 3′s, 4′s, 5′s and 10′s. I was quite surprised and felt that rendered this book incomplete. I had to purchase yet another workbook with a complete set of worksheets, but this time I went to a bookstore so I could inspect the entire book to ensure it was complete.
This book is what you expect from DK. Solid drills with clear and concise reviews on all 3rd grade topics. Answer keys are complete and easy to lookup. Nice stickers and high quality printing. The problems are not difficult. Its goal is to make your child master the fundamentals, not just know them.
An effective way to achieve mastery is to time the drills. I recommend you set a clock for your child and let him experience the real test feeling and get rid of procrastination. There is a nice website Beestar.org that provides free daily timed math exercises you can use to compare your child’s speed with others. My son’s math skills (include speed) improved significantly with this book. I’m glad I bought it.

~The Rebecca Review
This product is a great tool for the rising fourth grader who needs constant assistance with mathematical deficiencies. This book provides explanations and practice for all of the elements of the curriculum that a fourth grader will encounter. It is extremely hard for me to give any product the highest rating possible; however, this product deserves the highest rating possible.
This workbook was an excellent review of all topics covered in 4th grade math with an easy to manage number of problems per page and excellent examples. The 5th grade book covers much of the same material, so I wouldn’t buy both

Truly Hilarious
Just fun
Bab A Sub Deb is Great!
Bab is a melodramtic young lady with a habit of getting herself into hilarious scrapes as she attempt to deal with the indignity of not being allowed to be a debutante (deb) like her (slightly!) older sister.
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. I still laugh out loud over Bab’s sincere “lothing” of her enemies and her attempts to do good deed by helping others with their “speling.”
Ms. Rinehart seems to find a different line to follow with every book she writes. I was not expecting Bab to be what it is at all. First of all, it was the first Rinehart book I had ever read and I was beginning to think my Kindle was having a bad day or Ms. Rinehart was incapable of spelling anything. In actuality, I would say she is a very talented speller, besides being a very talented writer. Anyone who could mis-spell that many words and still be understood is a genius! Bab is a fun book to read. This young lady cannot seem to stay out of trouble no matter how much she tries. There is a mild mystery to her madness, but don’t expect murder and mayhem.
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. It reads just like a teenager writing it which is a credit to the author, M Reinhart.
The scrapes and adventures Bab gets herself into and the long suffering she puts up with are too funny (because of course the rest of the world just doesn’t understand the woes of being a sub-deb). Bab is only a sub- deb as in the 1920′s, young women were debutants and had their coming out parties at age 18. Poor Bab is only 16 and desperately wants to be older..remember when we all felt that way?
Read it for yourself and if you have an adolescent daughter, pass it on!

Great Workbook
Good but Basic
I bought this book for my 6 years old kid. she is happy and welling to do the exercises in daily basis. This book encourges her mentality in thinkg and calculating. I strongly recommend this book for any parents who want to make thier kids A Students
I am a fan of kumon and this is very much in line with all their books. Solidly and step by step working through what the book covers. It is very basic and would be a good first introduction to word problems. The numbers involved are below 15 and mostly below 10. I probably wouldn’t have bought it for my year 1 child if I could have seen the content, as it is better suited to a kindergarten child with an average grasp on basic number concepts. My child happily completes it as it has nice pictures along with each problem.

~The Rebecca Review
A high quality workbook like many others from DK. It organizes grade 2 math in 156 topics and gives drills on each of them. Very comprehensive. Star stickers are given for rewarding good work. Most sheets practice adding and subtracting facts. They are solid but a bit repeating.
If you want your child to be good at math, you should additionally find some fun math programs. My friend referred me to a Houston community web site http://www.beestar.org. It provides math exercises every week with rankings to keep kids interested. In the past my son only played games on the Internet. Now he solves math problems online every week. I love it.
My daughter is ahead of her class and needed to be challenged, by page 7 we found this book definitely a useful learning tool. It does NOT review 1st grade. I find it frustrating to purchase an age level book and have half of it be just stuff they have already covered. This IS NOT the case. Would definitely be a great book for home schooled children and look forward to purchasing the next levels.

Freak the Mighty Books Description
From Publishers Weekly
Maxwell Kane, a lumbering eighth grader who describes himself as a “butthead goon,” has lived with grandparents Grim and Gram ever since his father was imprisoned for murdering his mother. Mean-spirited schoolmates and special ed (for an undetermined learning disability) haven’t improved his self-image, so he is totally unprepared for a friendship with Kevin, aka Freak, a veritable genius with a serious birth defect that’s left him in braces and using crutches. Max is uplifted by Freak’s imagination and booming confidence, while Freak gets a literal boost–hoisted onto Max’s shoulders, he shares Max’s mobility. Together they become Freak the Mighty, an invincible duo. Philbrick’s first YA novel, already implausible, becomes choked with cliches and stereotypes as Max and Freak mix with B-movie lowlifes, a newly paroled Killer Kane kidnaps his son and Freak himself meets a cloyingly articulated fate. Contrived and unappetizing. Ages 10-14. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Rodman Philbrick’s ability to write interesting literature that appeals to young readers (especially teens) comes in handy with “Freak the Mighty.” This rather poignant and affecting novel follows the unlikely “Odd Couple”-like friendship between Max–who lives with his grandparents, and is an enourmous eighth grader on the slow side, yet has plenty of common sense, surrounded by his father’s reputation as a convicted killer–and Kevin, dubbed “Freak”–a 13 year old genius plagued with a birth defect that keeps him the size of a six year old. Aside from being physically contradictory, Kevin’s book smarts and well-read brilliancy seem the exact opposite of Max’s poor grammar and lack of motivation. But almost phenomically, in a karma-like manner, the two become instant companions. Their “quests” in the “yonder” of the nighborhoods reveal some rather interesting characters. Speaking of which, Philbrick explores the qualities our narrator Max, and his buddy Kevin, without missing a detail. Being thirteen when I read this book, my thoughts allthroughout reading “Freak the Mighty” were, “How can some old guy know how WE talk, how WE think?” I was shocked at myself for crying when I had finished the final chapter.Together, Max and Kevin become “Freak the Mighty” with their un-cliched friendship and dependance upon one another. Philbrick’s novel is wonderfully humanistic; there’s just something so reassuring in the human race about the thought of the giant Max walking with the enthusiastic three-and-a-half foot Kevin hoisted onto his shoulders.Young readers will fall in love with “Freak the Mighty” for its realistic portrayal of a teenager, while adults will undoubtedly savor its humane touch.
This book has a wonderful plot. Here are the 2 characters that make the book so good: Maxwell Cane {Kicker},the main character with a heart of gold and Kevin{Freak},a boy whose has the body of a 5 year old but, has the mind of a genius and the insides of a nomal 13 year old {which cause trouble}. They are not the most likely pair but together they are Freak the Mighty with the right combination of brains (Freak) and brawn (Max). The pair go on many exciting adventures including a trip to Loretta and Iggy Lee’s house. Iggy is the leader of the panheads, a motorcycle gang feared by everyone. Loretta is Iggy’s girlfriend. Iggy and Loretta know the dreadful Kenny Kane who is in jail for strangling Max’s mother (which explains why he lives with his grandparents). If I tell you any more I will spoil the book for you. But I will give you one hint. Kenny Kane is back. This is a exquisite book. My teacher read it out loud and my whole six grade class roared at the funny parts and really wanted a different ending. I think Max is someone to relate to and recommend this book highly to all kids who love reading and a great story. Be sure to check out the back of the book for Freak’s dictionary.
Thirteen year old Max Kane has a major problem with self-esteem. But who wouldn’t, given what he’s been through? His mother is dead, murdered years before by his father, who is now serving time in prison. Max lives with his grandparents in a basement room, rarely emerging from his "down under" world because he thinks he’s too huge and too stupid to function. When Kevin moves next door, though, Max’s life begins to change. Kevin, also thirteen, has the body of a young child but the brain of a grownup. The two become friends and allies, combining their strengths and uniting as "Freak the Mighty." Max has the muscle power, while Kevin has the imagination (and teaches Max to unlock his own). The two embark upon various hilarious and suspenseful adventures, culminating in a kidnapping and a daring rescue. The best part of the book, besides the terrific story of a friendship, is the writing style. Narrated by Max, the story reads like an eighth grade boy’s monologue — conversational, funny, and instantly appealing. This book is a real treasure.

Fun for Kids and Adults alike
X is very useful if your name is Nixie Knox…
Great book, great tape, but not together
Dr. Seuss takes his wild imagination and fun and turns it into one of the better alphabet books for kids. Every letter includes several appropriate items. They can range from the ordinary, left leg for “L”, to the humorous. My family can still tell you exactly what begins with “Q”, and we haven’t reread this book in at least 15 years.Parents tired of the standard “A” is for apple, “B” if for ball book will find a breath of fresh air here, too. They’ll be laughing at some of the sentences and enjoying the meter used throughout. This book bills itself as an “I Can Read” book. I hesitate slightly only because Dr. Seuss does throw a few of his trademark unusual characters into the mix. A parent will need to be close by to help their child sound out the harder words.Dr. Seuss was a master at making picture books fun for all ages. This is a classic example parents will enjoy reading time and time again, even if their kids ask for it every night.
Dr. Seuss’s ABC Beginner Book is perhaps the best way I know to introduce your child to the alphabet. There’s a lot of fun for young children in this book; the illustrations are wonderful and the use of the letters in making new words for children is excellent. It truly reflects well on Dr. Seuss that he wrote such a fine book for young child just beginning to learn how to read.
This book introduces young children to the alphabet by first showing them the letters of the alphabet in both upper case and lower case forms; and then (usually on the next page) the child sees a thing or a creature with a name that starts with the letter being introduced. This book also asks questions to make children think. For example, the book at one point asks “What begins with (the letter) B?” The answers in the book use as many words beginning with that letter as possible; and I think that’s very good.
The book also encourages young children to go ahead and learn more with a sprinkling of pats on the back like “Hooray! Hooray!” This is a very good strategy.
The hardcover of the book is strong enough to resist any accidental damage your young child may want to do to it; and the quality of the paper is excellent.
Overall, Dr. Seuss’s ABC is a fine book that remains one of the best ways for children to learn the alphabet even all these years later after it was first written and published. I highly recommend this book for children just beginning to learn the alphabet.
The book is wonderful, by itself. The tape is fun, especially the music, but the speed and page turns are fast. My kindergarten group had a hard time keeping up, but they really enjoyed the tape. I would recommend using them separately at the 5-6 year old stage.

The Periodic Table. Books Description
From Booklist
The scope and qualities of this unique book are summed up better in its subtitle than in its title. While Dingle does little to explain the periodic table, he shows all the elements of the periodic table on a chart with very original graphics and spotlights 64 of the elements for closer examination on single pages or double-page spreads. Placed against a list including an element’s symbol, atomic number, atomic weight, color, standard state, and classification, the element introduces itself in one, two, or three cheeky but informative paragraphs that focus on its qualities and uses. Each presentation ends with the element’s date of discovery or earliest known use, its density, its melting point, its boiling point, and a digitally assisted color illustration with a distinctively Japanese, cartoonlike quality. The endpapers feature a glossary and an illustrated foldout poster of the periodic table. The quirky, idiosyncratic artwork and the unusual voice make this little book an appealing choice for introducing elements of the periodic table. Phelan, Carolyn

a great little guidebook!
A Great Book for introducing the Periodic Table to kids
Who knew it could be such fun?
The Periodic Table, Elements with Style! Is a charming little book that serves as a nice chemistry introduction. The book is most appropriate for kids working at about a 4th grade level or higher. It’s aimed at upper elementary to middle school kids, but would also make a handy reference guide or review for high schoolers who are not overly familiar with the periodic table.
This book is about 100 pages long. Each element has a first person description offered in a “my space” style narrative. Strontium, for instance says, ” I’m Scottish, named after the town of Strontian where I was discovered. You may see me as a shy, run-of-the-mill, silver-colored metal, but I’ve got a few surprises up my sleeve…” Magnesium brags, ” I’m sparky, and I always cause a reaction!” Barium’s page declares, “…I’m a real rocker and more reactive than calcium.” These sometimes silly descriptions do provide useful information about the various elements, and make the task of memorization easier.
Accompanying cartoon type illustrations give a visual presence to each element. Gold resembles a ghost from the old Pac-Man game, standing high on a pedestal. Lead appears as a warrior dressed in Spartan style. My personal favorite is sulfur, who is quite absurdly shown as a cute little girl dressed in yellow! My seven year old daughter found the simply rendered drawings to be highly amusing and they helped her form an identity for each element.
The book is organized into sections about hydrogen, the alkali metals, the alkaline earth metals, the transition elements, the boron elements, the carbon elements, the nitrogen elements, the oxygen elements, the halogen elements, the noble gases, the lanthanides and actinides, and the transactinides. A handy glossary in the back explains terminology such as gamma ray, isotope, and catalyst. The bottom of each element’s page contains facts about date of discovery or earliest known use, as well as density, melting point, and boiling point.
It’s cute, it’s clever, and very enticing to the youngster interested in science. A great resource!
The best thing about this book is that it makes a subject that MOST adults (let alone children) consider to be completely dry, extremely interesting!!
As I read through this book, I was struck by how much it reads like some of my kids Pokemon books – the drawings of the elements have a Japanese anime look to them, and they are grouped in very Pokemon-like groups, “The Alkali Earth Metals” (once thought to be harmless and boring, until they were released from Oxygen, at which point they became unruly), “The Transition Elements” (a motley crew of rednecks), etcetera.
And each individual element has a catchy description, a cool drawing, and the same 10 basic bullet points facts for each one (symbol, color, classification, etc..) This presentation makes the information very accessible to most children. It would actually make excellent information for trading or flash cards.
In fact, I think the author could make a great educational game based on this book. Kids could easily learn and retain some of the fascinating facts about different elements if it was presented in the context of a game..
What a fresh and original look at the periodic table! The book is compact in size, and gives a brief synopsis, including most the data from the periodic table such as the symbol, atomic number and weight, its standard state, color and classification.
The book is organized by periodic table group, the graphic at the top of the page shows each element’s location on the table. The elements introduce themselves with a sense of humor and share facts about their appearance and uses.
Zinc, symbol Zn, says, “Here to protect and serve, I’m more useful than you’d zinc! I’m a very sociable element that’s always happy to mix in with other metals.”
The illustrations that represent each element make the book. Silicon is a computer chip/centipede while Aluminum is a stylized airplane. They evoke Japanese anime characters and the poster of the periodic table bound into the back of the book remids me of the Pokemon poster that used to hang in my entling’s bedroom. I found the drawings utterly compelling.
The book invites casual reading as well as cover to cover absorption.
